Safety First

The Safe Sleep Seven

Based on La Leche League International's guidelines and decades of research by Dr. James McKenna. When all seven criteria are met, bedsharing risk approaches that of crib sleeping.

1

Non-smoker

No smoking in the home or outside by anyone who shares the bed.

2

Sober & unimpaired

No alcohol, sedating medications, or drugs that affect alertness.

3

Breastfeeding mother

Breastfeeding activates the protective C-curl position and synchronized sleep cycles.

4

Healthy, full-term baby

Baby was born at term and is in good health with no medical conditions.

5

Baby on back

Baby is always placed on their back to sleep, never on their side or tummy.

6

Lightly dressed

Baby is dressed lightly to prevent overheating. No swaddling — arms and legs must be free.

7

Safe surface

Firm mattress, no gaps or crevices, no heavy blankets or pillows near baby.

He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and author of 'Safe Infant Sleep: Expert Answers to Your Cosleeping Questions'. His work has fundamentally reshaped scientific understanding of infant sleep biology and the risks and benefits of different sleep arrangements.

"Every time you respond to your baby at night, you are literally building their brain. You are teaching their nervous system that the world is safe and that their needs will be met."
