Does the finished surface compress excessively under the US firmness fixture concept?
Why this test matters
- The US mandatory crib-mattress rule (16 CFR Part 1241 / ASTM F2933) includes a firmness method built around a weighted fixture and feeler element.
- The concept transfers meaningfully to a family mattress as an engineering benchmark, outside the rule's product scope.
Method basis
Internal comparative test derived from the CPSC-documented firmness fixture concept: nominal total mass 5.2 kg, 203 mm circular bottom contact disc, with a feeler element detecting whether the surface rises around the load. ASTM F2933-25 (effective under 16 CFR 1241 on 3 May 2026) added/clarified fixture requirements — our final internal protocol will be reconciled against the current read-only standard before testing. The product is outside the crib-mattress scope and carries no ASTM/CPSC certification.
Planned procedure (draft protocol)
- 1Verify fixture mass and critical dimensions on camera.
- 2Mark test positions: centre, quarter points, identified softest/worst-case location.
- 3Add family-bed positions above module transitions and across the width — clearly labelled as additional internal locations, not ASTM-required locations.
- 4Apply the fixture at each position; record the feeler outcome without cuts on video.
