What are we testing?
Does the finished sleeping surface show excessive indentation under the spherical-load method used by EN 16890 for cot/crib mattresses?
Why this test matters
- Excessive surface softness is one of the physical properties crib-mattress standards test for.
- The same physical question is meaningful on a large family mattress, even though the product is outside EN 16890's certification scope.
Method basis
Internal engineering application of the EN 16890 spherical-load firmness method. Publicly documented fixture values: 115 mm spherical load diameter, 2.5 kg spherical load mass, 111 mm template centre opening, 0.26 kg template mass. The family mattress is outside EN 16890's cot/crib product scope and is not EN 16890 certified.
Procedure
- 1Assemble the finished product in the marketed configuration (cover and full-width topper fitted).
- 2Mark test positions: geometric centre, sleeping zones, above and adjacent to module junctions, identified softest point.
- 3Apply the spherical load per the referenced method at each position.
- 4Record indentation behaviour against the method's condition.

- Indentation behaviour at each marked position under the referenced spherical-load setup.

Documentation
This test was completed before our current photographic/video documentation procedure was introduced. The setup, method and result were recorded internally, but no photographic record was created at the time. We intend to repeat the test under the current documentation protocol so the complete setup can also be shown publicly.
